This 2001-02 Upper Deck Young Guns Ilya Kovalchuk rookie card is a first year card of one of the most talented hockey players in the game. Though being recognized as one of the top offensive threats in the league over the last decade, Kovalchuk's popularity pales in comparison to such peers as Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. Despite this, this card can be fairly expensive on the open market. It is a good mark for any serious contemporary card collector. Drafted first overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, the Russian winger is a multiple time All Star and a former Rocket Richard Trophy winner. The controversial contract he signed with the New Jersey Devils before the 2009-10 season will probably contribute to a new collective bargaining agreement.
